IF JESUS CAME . . . |

Through the clink and tinkle of the bottles and glasses at the bar the jukebox blasted Tex Hitter's unctuous boom:
"If Jesus came to your house to spend a day or tew. . . ." From the phonograph at a dime store record counter another voice in another version lilted with a bouncy, corn pone accompaniment: "If He came unexpected, I wonder whut yew'd dew. . . ."
All through the South last week, the embarrassing chant of "If Jesus Came to Your House" sounded from phonographs. Victor, Decca, and Capitol have each made recordings of the song in cooperation with three music publishers. None of the publishers know who wrote the original. It is "showing action" so far only in the South and Southwest, the market for which it was pointed. But such things have been known to spread, and soon lumbermen in jackboots, starlets in cashmere sweaters, and bnefcase-toters m high-buttoned charcoal grey may be able to wince to:
Would you have to change your clothes before you let
Him in, Or hide some magazines and put the Bible where they
been? . . . Would you be glad to have Him meet your very closest
friends, Or hope that they would stay away until His visit
ends? . . . Would you be glad to have Him stay forever, on and on, Or would you sigh with great relief when He at last
had gone? |
